“Sawm” or “Siyam,” which refers to fasting during the month of Ramadan, is the fourth pillar of Islam. It is obligatory for all Muslims who have reached puberty, with certain exceptions that will be discussed later in this article.

Sawm entails abstaining from various activities daily during the month of Ramadan, from dawn (the call to Al-Fajr Prayer) until sunset (the call to Al-Maghrib Prayer). This includes refraining from food, drink (including water), medication, immoral actions, sexual activity, backbiting, harming oneself or others, smoking, intoxication, and impure thoughts.

Every night, before the start of a new fasting day, Muslims must make the intention to fast. This intention does not need to be vocalized, as it is fundamentally an act of the heart that does not involve spoken words. It is sufficient to have the sincere intention to fast, obeying Allah’s (SWT) commands and seeking forgiveness and salvation.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a particularly significant time. While it is the month in which the obligation of fasting is fulfilled, it is also the month when the Quran was revealed to our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Therefore, Muslims are encouraged to intensify their adherence to Islamic teachings by avoiding all sinful behavior and engaging in more good deeds, such as studying the Quran and performing Sunnah and Nafl prayers.

Importance of Fasting

Fasting, or “Sawm,” serves as a reminder of the teachings of the Quran, as the entire Quran is often recited during this month. It fosters a sense of unity among Muslims, as they fast together and break their fast together. Fasting encourages individuals to prioritize their faith over bodily desires, emphasizing worship of Allah (SWT).

    Fasting provides a valuable opportunity to reconnect with the spiritual essence of our physical existence. By abstaining from harmful substances, we not only give our digestive system a break but also allow our spirits to detoxify.

    Fasting is an effective method for losing weight, as it promotes fat burning more efficiently than traditional dieting. It targets fat cells without compromising muscle tissue, making it a favored practice among athletes seeking to lower body fat percentages before competitions.
  3. Improving Insulin Sensitivity
    Fasting positively impacts insulin sensitivity, enhancing the body’s ability to manage carbohydrates (sugar). Research indicates that fasting periods improve insulin’s effectiveness in guiding cells to absorb glucose from the bloodstream.
  4. Boosting Metabolism
    Intermittent fasting allows the digestive system to rest, energizing metabolism and promoting more efficient calorie burning. Improved digestion enhances metabolic function, contributing to better overall health and fat-burning capability.
  5. Enhancing Brain Function
    Fasting has been linked to improved brain function due to increased production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). This protein stimulates the conversion of brain stem cells into new neurons and promotes various chemicals that support neural health. It also protects brain cells from changes associated with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
